RC Combat is a blast, without a doubt the most fun you can have with a transmitter in your hand.
The simplest and most cost effective way of getting into combat is with SPAD's, with the exception of your radio gear and engine they can be built using materials found in most DIY shops, ugly they may be, but built correctly they will fly extremely well.
There are other classes of combat around which use scale models, usually of the WW2 type, although much better looking aircraft the investment in time and money in their construction is far greater than that of a SPAD which can be built in an evening or two and for the cost of a couple of pints of the amber nectar, believe me in 'the heat of battle' the attractiveness of your plane is the last thing on your mind, telling it apart from the others in the sky with it is foremost. It is also an inevitable consequence of combat that at some point your plane will be in the same piece of sky as someone elses, and it will return to earth in many more pieces than when it left, cheapness and speed of construction are therefore paramount in powered combat, nothing else can touch a SPAD for this.
Competitions
A motley collection of like minded people from the central region of the UK have got together through the RCModelflyers.co.uk forum and our own forum here to organise Spad combat meetings at various locations in the Central area, these meetings usually have an entrance fee of around £10 which includes BBQ food for the day and currently you could expect to see an attendance of around 15 pilots, some of these guys have a round trip of 300 ish miles or more, and are obviously barking mad
The combat meetings are arranged around bouts lasting 5 minutes, and the number one rule is fun, safety is paramount of course, and no one is allowed near the flight line without a Hard hat on, there are also penalties for pilots who stray out of the combat area, current rules are available from the menu at the top left. People from all walks of life attend these meetings, and were all a pretty amicable lot, our number include an ex British champion and world championship contender control line combat pilot (You'll know who he is, he usually wins ) and others from all walks of life, if you would like to come along then the best thing to do would be to go over to the forum or the RCModelflyers.co.uk forum and register (you need to be a registered member to view the RCMFspad section) and keep your eye out for the next meeting.
We will also have the next combat meets time and place in the box on the top Right of the page beside the header!
Good luck, you'll need it, and watch your 6, there may be a 'Gilly the Hun' on it
